CK FARM, a 4H project that started in 1981, is located east of Louisville, KY. All of the members of the Kinney family take part in the operation, so the herd carries the prefixes of Jean-Kinney’s, Cathy’s and Kevin’s. Since the beginning our goal has been to breed strong, productive, dairy does. With these goals in mind, the herd has enjoyed a number of accomplishments; linear appraisals, milk records, show wins and seeing our animals achieve for other breeders have been highlights.

We feel our successes are attributed to a number of animals from the early years of our 4H project. In there own way, all of our animals have had an influence on the herd, but there have been two animals, GCH Sodium Oaks Whoopee Xtremist 5*M and ++*B Sodium Oaks Yankee, that have made a major impact on our breeding program. Although their presence has been absent since the early 90s, their genetic value is still visible in our current stock and in other herds throughout the country.

Since this is a show herd, a goal for all our animals is permane nt champion status. However, we don't necessarily feel that this designation is always a true reflection of an animal's worth. It is our opinion that strong linear appraisal scores can tell more about the genetic value of an individual. It is this belief that gives momentum to our goal of consecutive generations of animals scoring excellent. The herd has been scored in 2002, 2003 and will be scored again in 2005.

Time constraints, changes in the herd, and other interests had recently limited the showing of the herd. Until 2001, The Kentucky State Fair and KY Exhibitor Shows were the only two shows that the herd continually attended. The animals were competitive at the 2001 KY State Fair/Exhibitor Shows and Taste of Ginger received Best Udder of Show. Given that, the decision was made to attend more shows in 2002 and this show season proved to be a year that a number of goals were accomplished. The herd, for the first time, participated in Linear appraisals; with three does evaluating excellent, two does finished their championships, one-day-milking star designations were received, and we attended 11 shows in KY, IN, and TN, where they brought home 9 Grand Champions, 6 Reserve Champions, 2 Best Udder In Show, and 1 Best In Show awards, including Grand Champion wins at the KY, IN and TN State Fairs.

In 2003 the milking herd was evaluated for the second time. With five does scoring EX 90 or better. The herd was exhibited at 7 shows in KY, IN, GA, and MS. A number of the does started work towards their permanent champion status. Tiffany, being one of them, was Grand Champion at the Indiana Helping Hands Show. Karma, one of our Exurbanite daughters, made us proud by placing 1st six times in the aged doe class. Another Exurbanite daughter, Bopp, which is a recorded grade, was 6 times Grand Champion, twice Reserve Champion and once Best of Show. The show season ended in August with the conclusion of the Kentucky State Fair, where we were named GCH Sr. Recorded Grade, as well as, Top Herdsman Award. This was Bopp's 5th time to win the KY State Fair.

2004 was a very exciting summer, as it brought us some of the most encouraging young progeny that we have had in quite awhile. We attended 9 shows in IN, KY and TN. The herd was awarded 9 GCH, 11 RGCH, 3 BOB, 1 BIS and 1 Top Herdsman Award. Throughout the show season, and at the IN State Fair, Tiffany and Slyvie continuously made us proud by placing 1st and 2nd, and both easily finishing their Championships. At the 100th KY State Fair, where we were Top Herdsman, Wistful received the Sr. Reserve Grand Champion award and Osceola, who was 1st at IN, KY and TN State Fairs, was Jr. Reserve Grand Champion. One very proud moment, at the 100th KY State Fair, was winning the Grand Champion Recorded Grade Jr. and Sr. Doe awards. At age 7, this was Bopp’s 6th time to win the KY State Fair. At the TN State Fair, Slyvie finished her championship by going Grand and Best of Breed. Cigaretto, one of our Cigar daughters, won the TN State Fair Jr. Reserve Grand Champion award. We are just as proud of our 4-year-old doe Lena, as well as, Osceola who were undefeated in their age groups. We are very humbled and grateful by how well our herd placed during the 2004 show season. We now eagerly wait the freshening of this year’s progeny by Cigar, Exurbanite and Sodium Oaks Xcell.

In years to come we will look back at 2005 as turning point for our herd. It definitely was a year of changes, surprises and accomplishments.  It was in 2005 that our animals received the highest linear appraisal scores to date, with three of the +*B Kevin's Xtreme Exurbanite daughters in our herd scoring 91, 92 and 93.  In the Mt. Zion Herd, Exurbanite's son + *B Walnut-Fork XE Khartoum classified an impressive EX91 (EEE) SG and in the Walnut Fork herd his daughter SGCH Walnut Fork Urban Kalahari 7*M is a permanent EX 91 VEEE. We are very pleased with the influence and successes that this buck has had on so many different herds, notably Irish Meadows and Walnut Fork.

We did attend five ADGA shows in IN, KY and TN. There were a number of class winners and Champions, as well as, Reserve Champions, but the highlight had to be the 100th TN State Fair, where Karma was Grand and Best of Breed. This was the 2nd time that Karma attended the TN State Fair and received these honors. As well, Amaze Me was Reserve Grand at the show.

In the fall of 2005, the farm was sold to a developer. The lands that we have always known as home will now succumb to progress. A move to the neighboring county is planned for the fall of 2006. Due to the move and unanswered questions, the herd will be reduced by half and we will only be retaining 6-8 doe kids.

2006 is still feeling the changes of 2005. Since barns and fencing were going up this summer, the herd remained dry and we did not attend any shows. We are very pleased with our Big Al and Kendis offspring and have again this fall planned to use these two bucks along with Cigar. The bucks were liner appraised this past August. We are not sure what the coming year holds for the herd, however, we do plan to attend a few shows and once again have the whole herd appraised.

When buying an animal from us, we want you to have the same success with that animal that we would. Because we believe that how the animal performs for you is a reflection of our name, only quality animals will be sold as show/breeding stock. Jr. Bucks are available by advanced order and Jr. Does will be offered on a limited basis. We require a $100.00 deposit per kid ordered. All deposits are only refundable if your choice is not born or if retained as a herd replacement. The price of the kid includes delivery to the Louisville International Airport, but does not include health papers, crate or shipping charges. All accounts must be paid in full by a money order or cash prior to shipping. Before purchase, buyer and seller will go over the condition and quality of the animal. Once stock leaves the farm, buyers assume all responsibilities for animals; no guarantees are implied or intended. Please email us for additional information on the entire herd, current stock availability and prices.
